We also have available hard tissue laser. It's used on cavities that are very small. Especially in kids, this is wonderful because we don't have to numb. The laser works by exciting the water molecules within the cavity, and it takes the cavity away painlessly. We can put a filling in and you're good to go. I've been using it for about 11 years now, and it's my favorite thing I've ever had in dentistry because it works so well. You have a fear of needles. It takes that away because you ... there is no needles. There is no need for a shot. The actual laser treatment is ... you just feel some vibration and the water squirting out. There is no pain. If you have small fillings that need to be done, we can do it with the laser, and it works extremely well.

Our Composite Tooth Fillings Stop Cavities
No one likes to think about getting a tooth filled, but for many people, it’s a reality. Even with good oral hygiene habits, cavities can form in hard-to-reach corners that your toothbrush and dental floss might miss.Doctor Fortier Talks about Fillings Read Transcript
If you come in and some of your old metal fillings are looking ... there's either shadows underneath them or chips in them, it's time to replace them so bacteria doesn't get underneath them, undermine them, and get a cavity, which could cause root canal, tooth loss, et cetera. When we take them out, we put in tooth-colored fillings now. They are amazingly aesthetic, but they also enhance the tooth as far as strength goes. They seal all the way around the edge. The old metal fillings we put in – which we put in for years, and they were the best available, I put in five or 10,000 of them – leak as soon as they're put in. That's the problem with them. They start leaking around the edge the day after they're put in.
The new tooth-colored ones bond to the tooth so that the bacteria can't get underneath like they could the old metal ones. Now, if your fillings are still in good shape, we don't take them out just to take them out. They still can be serviceable for many, many years. And we make a decision based on each individual tooth and your perception of what the tooth needs.
Our office uses technically advanced dental equipment. If the decayed area is small, we may use a laser to gently remove the decay without drilling and placing a filling. If you do need a dental filling, our goal will be to stop the decay and get your smile back into shape – quickly and accurately. You’ll enjoy computer-controlled anesthetic that ensures you get the precise amount of numbing medication you need, more comfortably than with a syringe injection.
Plus, you can rest assured your new filling will look great. Dr. Fortier will use composite resin, a metal-free material that contains no mercury. Not only will your filling last for many years, it will blend in perfectly with the rest of your teeth. No one will be able to tell you’ve had a tooth filled.
If you have old amalgam (silver) fillings that are coming apart, we can go ahead and remove them safely, replacing them with natural-looking composite fillings. Many of our patients have improved the look of their smile with this treatment.
